In this project, drew inspiration from the work The Black Atlantic by theorist Paul Gilroy, which allowed me to delve deeper into the complexities of the black diaspora and explore how it shapes individual and collective experiences. This project aimed to encapsulate The Black Atlantic experience to honour my family members who lost their lives and futures during the Trans-Atlantic slave trade and create artefacts of sentimental value to symbolise those items that were lost, stolen and destroyed through forced migration and slavery. I have been working to expand my understanding of the multifaceted and intersectional nature of the black diasporic experience by exploring themes such as multi-consciousness, the passage of time, and generational connections. By doing this, I aim to create a powerful and inclusive artistic narrative that provokes thought and reflection and contributes to and continues the dialogue surrounding the black diaspora, race, and identity.
